About the Book
In this book for teenagers, English writer Lucy Christopher explores the phenomenon of Stockholm syndrome, and if we look broader - tells a poignant story of unhealthy attachment, talks about the loss of freedom and a feeling of paralysis.
When Ty kidnaps 16-year-old Gemma at Bangkok airport, she is terrified and thinks only about how to escape. But gradually, the girl becomes penetrated by the personality of this strange young man and begins to sympathize with him. The reader overcomes the temptation to perceive the book as a romantic story, just as Gemma struggles with her feelings towards her kidnapper.
The book, written in the format of a letter from the main heroine to the kidnapper, conveys an important thought that the basis of healthy relationships always lies in safety, trust, and freedom of will.
What, in our opinion, this book is about:
- About safety, trust, and freedom of will in relationships
- About the boundary between good and evil
- About the boundaries of freedom and personal protection
- About the nature of emotional abuse, ways to protect against it, searches for a way out of toxic relationships
Why we decided to publish this book
The issue of violence in relationships has only recently begun to be widely discussed. It seems important to us that not only adults but also teenagers know and can recognize the traits of unhealthy, codependent relationships.
We believe that this book will become a vaccine for young men and women who are just beginning to enter into romantic relationships. Only an honest discussion of this topic will teach to treat each other with respect and understanding, to value someone else's freedom, and to protect one's boundaries. That is why we included in the book an afterword by psychologist Yana Kataeva, who shares her experience of therapy and reflects on harmful stereotypes associated with romantic relationships.
Who this book is for
For lovers of books that ask complex questions. For young men and women who like quality, well-written contemporary prose.
