"Living Spring" is a rare book that brings joy and peace to the soul. In it, Igumen Georgy (Evdayev), the abbot of the Meshchovsk Holy-Georgievsky Monastery, tells about the village where he was born and raised. In an amazing way, the peasant way of life in this village (in the Kirovsky district of the Kaluga region) has preserved a patriarchal structure almost to the present day, based on the ancestral faith. Everything was done 'according to the order'. There was a specific order for everything - how to court, how to celebrate a wedding, how to go into the forest and which prayers to say to not get lost, how to plant a garden and who to pray to for a good harvest 'for every share, for sale, and for theft'... And all of this is written in a lively, vivid, and precise folk language. You read it and rejoice. By the end of the book, you will have gathered a lot of such 'joyful benefits'. A special theme is how holidays were celebrated in the village, and how the Great Lent was observed. It seemed inconceivable to the peasants of the very recent past not to be in church on the Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, not to listen to the Canon of St. Andrew of Crete... Simple lay people lived in such a way that even monks sometimes had to learn from them. The abbot calls this life 'walking before the Face of God'. Several stories are dedicated to particularly vivid personalities raised in that environment. In a separate chapter, the abbot introduces us to the unique author, also a resident of the village of Zhilino, the son of the well-known local ascetic Fyodor Voluyev. The simple tales and parables of Ivan Fyodorovich seem to reflect the holiness of his father. The book includes the personal photo archive of Igumen Georgy.
