The works of the Graceful Filaret were always distinguished by the simplicity and clarity of the presentation, the edification, the correctness of the language, this work was no exception. The author talks about the life, exploits and miracles of Russian saints and ascetics, stopping the reader"s attention at the most important and most instructive events for him. Like an experienced psychologist and a talented artist, he depicts living people with their joys and sorrows, hopes and corrections. In other words, any reader, even the most young and inexperienced, will not meet anything incomprehensible in the book and will be able to understand all the told, without needing explanations and clarifications. There is another, additional value of our book, on which I want to stop a little. & quot, visualization is inseparable with the gospel narrative and, conversely, the gospel narrative with visualization. What the word reports through a rumor, the painting shows silently, through the image & quot. Following these words, said back in 787 at the VII Ecumenical Council, we illustrated the works of the Bishop Filaret with drawings depicting all the saints and the holidays that are discussed in the text. The drawings were performed by the outstanding Russian graphic artist Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev, known for his excellent technique and knowledge of artistic monuments of Russian antiquity. According to the critics, he is & quot, one of those best and few who taught us all to appreciate and love real indigenous Rus" & quot. Some drawings from those included in the book were transferred from the ancient best images, which indicates their special value, others are created again with strict observance of the ancient Byzantine-Russian style. Thus, regardless of the overall interest, this book can be beneficial to modern icon painters, often, unfortunately, distinguished by unbridled fantasy and complete unfamiliarity with ancient iconographic traditions. The manual for the education of the soul can be called this book of the biographies of all Russian saints and ascetics. No matter how difficult their earthly path was, but they went through it in the Gospel, therefore, such a way is available for everyone who wishes to follow it, in accordance with the gospel commandments, which do not change either with time or with circumstances. But we can only admit: even if people who are righteously living, & quot, let them multiply their truth, and the sinners will begin to live in truth, not indulging in the memory of the past & quot
