Written a year before the death of the author Roman "Little Mistress of the Big House" is unusual for the work of a writer who glorified by the works of the adventure genre. At the base of the plot here is a love triangle. The "Little Mistress" shocked by Jack London"s contemporaries with sexual frankness, but London himself considered this book with his best work. Although the novel cannot be called in the full sense of the autobiographical, the events described in it are echoing with what happened in the California ranch of Jack London and his wife Charmian in the winter of the late 1912 - early 1913
