Fyodor Sologub is the creative pseudonym of the Russian poet, writer, playwright, and translator Fyodor Kuzmich Teternikov (1863-1927). He did not become a writer right away. After graduating from the St. Petersburg Teachers' Institute in 1882, he served as a teacher and then as an inspector in provincial towns for a whole 10 years. But once he started writing, he quickly gained fame. By the 1900s, Sologub was already considered one of the most famous Russian prose writers and a "first among equals" of poets. A real triumph was the publication of his novel "Petty Demon." This symbolic story about human passions - love, hatred, envy, meanness, sadism, debauchery, and ultimately madness - was enthusiastically received by the reading public.
