In a collective monograph prepared by employees of the Higher School of Economics, the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Lomonosov Moscow State University, key moments in the history of literary institutions in the Russian Empire in the 18th-19th centuries are revealed. Drawing on institutional theory and the concept of the public sphere, the authors study the formation of the social institution of literature in Russia, its autonomization and differentiation, interaction with government bodies and related institutions (education, judiciary, theater, etc.). The approach proposed in the monograph allows for a reevaluation of many traditional views on the history of Russian literature. The book is addressed to literary scholars, historians, cultural studies specialists, sociologists, as well as a wide range of readers. The compilers are A.V. Vdovin and K.Yu. Zubkov.
