Fyodor Dostoevsky famously referred to St. Petersburg as the intentional, most fantastical city on earth. Many other writers also wrote about the fateful 'mysteries of Petersburg' and its enigmas. But even more remarkable in its history was the fact that this city, especially under the gloomy northern sky, had a great concentration of literary geniuses. This includes Pushkin, Gogol, Griboedov, Dostoevsky, Blok, Leskov, Mandelstam, Anna Akhmatova, and many others. Almost all writers and poets of the 'golden' and 'silver' ages of Russian literature lived and created here. Why did this happen? This question is still pondered to this day. Petersburg is the northernmost of all the world's metropolises. But it is likely not due to the climate, but rather the special stimulating environment created by the close interaction of geniuses, the opportunity for free discussions, shared interests, and the exchange of talents, which occurred in Petersburg. But if that's the case, why aren't they visible in the city now? Perhaps it is connected to some secret, the secret history of Petersburg, which for over 300 years people have been trying to decipher but have been unable to.
The author of this book does not attempt to unravel the mystery of Petersburg; he simply tells the biographies of the geniuses of Russian literature who lived in the northern capital. But in the lives of many of them, there are also many mysteries and enigmas, just like in the city itself. In Petersburg-Leningrad, poets and writers not only created their masterpieces, dreamed, and soared in spirit, but also suffered, struggled, and perished. Petersburg is not only the city of literary geniuses; it is also a city of numerous life dramas, shattered destinies, incredible biographies, many literary mysteries, and enigmas. This book tells about all of this, about the extraordinary fates of the writers and poets of Petersburg.
