This textbook covers the main issues of semantics as a component of the course on general language theory. The first section of the book provides an introduction to the subject, a brief overview of the history of semantic theories, including their most recent history, and introduces concepts used in the semantic description of any significant language formations - from morphemes to entire texts. The second section is dedicated to lexical semantics. It discusses the main problems and methods of describing the substantive side of a word as a unit of language and speech. The third section analyzes the semantics of a sentence-statement considering three aspects: logical-semantic (propositional), communicative, and pragmatic, and discusses the formal means (metalanguages) used for its description. The problems of semantics are considered in the textbook from the perspective of an activity-based approach to language and in the context of the various tasks faced by applied linguistics. Several chapters of the textbook provide detailed illustrations of the ideas and methods presented in the author's specific semantic research. The textbook is intended not only for students of linguistic departments of philological faculties but also for specialists dealing with the creation or analysis of texts in natural language: literary scholars, journalists, translators, copywriters, etc., as well as anyone interested in the structure and functioning of language.
