The present book contains four essays by the academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences P.L. Kapitsa about the life and work of outstanding figures in world science: Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov (1711–1765), Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790), Ernest Rutherford (1871–1937), and Paul Langevin (1872–1946). They are revised transcripts of the author's speeches given in various years. The essay on Lomonosov was delivered at a meeting of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences on November 17, 1961, at the Institute of Physical Problems of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The essay on Franklin is based on a speech at a solemn meeting of the USSR Academy of Sciences on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Franklin's birth, held in the auditorium of Moscow State University on January 17, 1956. Memories of Professor Rutherford are based on a report given on November 14, 1937, shortly after Rutherford's death, at the N.D. Zelinsky Institute of Physical Chemistry of the USSR Academy of Sciences. With the report on Langevin, P.L. Kapitsa spoke at a joint meeting of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the "Friendship" Society, dedicated to the 85th anniversary of Langevin's birth on January 23, 1957. The scientific achievements of Lomonosov, Franklin, Rutherford, and Langevin and their role in scientific progress are considered in the light of later achievements in the respective fields of physics. The book is recommended for a wide range of readers interested in the lives and works of great scientists.
