Ivan Mikhaylovich Voronov - that was the name of Archimandrite Alipy before he took monastic vows - fought for four years on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War and traveled from Moscow to Berlin. And then for another thirteen years, he defended the Pskov-Pechersk Monastery, protecting it from closure. Shortly after the Great Patriotic War, thousands of cathedrals and churches were blown up, closed, and converted into warehouses, and a large part of the higher spiritual educational institutions were abolished. Almost all monasteries were disbanded. Many priests ended up in prisons. In Russia, only two monasteries remained active - the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, forcibly preserved by the authorities for display to foreigners, and the Pskov-Pechersk Monastery.
