"Leviathan" by Thomas Hobbes is a classic work of the English thinker of the 17th century. It outlines the main principles of his philosophy and teachings on the state. The book consists of four parts. In the first part - "Of Man" - it contains a psychological theory of the formation and development of human knowledge and a description of passions, morals, and religious beliefs of people. In the second part - "Of Commonwealth" - it characterizes the role, functions, and tasks of the state, as well as forms of state governance. In the third part - "Of a Christian Commonwealth" - it discusses the essence of the Christian state and the role of the church. In the fourth part - "Of the Kingdom of Darkness" - Hobbes criticizes scholastic philosophy and the church, which he considers to be the culprit of all evils and calamities of the state. The first Russian translation of "Leviathan," made in 1864, was confiscated and destroyed by the tsarist censorship.
