The grandson of N.M. Karamzin, prominent journalist and political figure Prince V.P. Meshchersky (1839-1914) was a friend and confidant of Grand Duke Alexander Alexandrovich, who became Emperor Alexander III in 1881. The publishing house "Novoe literaturnoe obozrenie" has already released two volumes of Meshchersky's letters to the Grand Duke for the years 1863-1868 (2011) and 1869-1878 (2014). The newly published letters from 1881-1894, addressed not to the heir to the throne but to the autocrat, touch upon more general issues directly related to the backstage of the country's internal and external policies. They contain valuable information about the emperor, the activities of ministries and the State Council, various aspects of Russian life at that time, as well as about the author of the letters himself and his newspaper "Grazhdanin" (Citizen).
