In 1936, in Greece, the king departed from power and a military dictatorship was established in the country. Two sisters, eight -year -old Melissa and ten -year -old Mirto, live on one of the Greek islands under the protection of a large prosperous family: grandfathers - a great connoisseur of ancient history - parents, aunts and a maid. But only Nikos, their senior cousin, tells the best stories about a leopard, whose scarecrow stands behind a glass window in a family living room. But suddenly adults become gloomy, speak of democracy and dictatorship, quarrel with each other. Nikos is forced to hide, and Mirto enters the militarized organization of Greek youth
