Sofia Markovna Makarova (1834-1888) became one of the first women in Russia to professionally engage in the craft of writing. In the 1860s, she successfully edited the popular youth magazine 'Zadushevnoe Slovo'. Readers loved her simple stories, which always carried a message of hope for a better world, where there are more good people than bad. "Lenochka" is an adaptation of a story by the German writer Emmi von Rhoden, "Lenchen Braun" (1883). Russian readers may be familiar with Rhoden from her novella "The Stubborn One". "Lenochka" is a classic Christmas story. In the family of the young heroine on the eve of Christmas, there is cruel poverty, not even enough money for bread. Therefore, Lenochka decides to bring an evergreen tree from the market to a wealthy neighbor to earn a few coins for sweets. The girl faces not only difficult trials but also unexpected encounters that can change her family's life. The book includes four color illustrations from a pre-revolutionary book by the St. Petersburg publisher F.A. Bitepazh, created by Peter Wagner, as well as black and white drawings by contemporary artist Elena Volodkina. Suitable for younger school-age children.
