Nathaniel Hawthorne is the author not only of "The Scarlet Letter," recognized as a classic of the 19th century, but also of numerous stories and novellas in the genres of mysticism and horror. His works "Young Goodman Brown," "The Birthmark," "Earth's Holocaust," "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment," and "The Masquerade of the Red Death" can be compared to such masterpieces as Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death," Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," and Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle." The collection includes the entire cycle of novellas "Legends of the Governor's House," as well as another dozen or so stories.
