Every grandfather-castle, having stood in the world for not just a hundred years, holds some kind of secret. One sheltered a company of harmful trolls, the second held an English king captive, and in the windows of the third, a pale woman in a white dress was seen at night...
Amazing medieval legends about castles and their surroundings have reached us from folk storytellers. These are stories where Christian miracles coexist with mystical transformations, where brave knights and beautiful princesses live, where there is pure and sincere love.
The author of the book, Ekaterina Vyacheslavovna Balobanova (1847-1927) - a Russian writer, librarian, and educator, an expert in Celtic language and literature. This collection includes legends of Brittany and the Rhine, collected by her from the words of local residents during travels in Europe in the 1860s - 1870s.
The book is accompanied by numerous illustrations, among which are early works of the artist E.E. Lansere, created by him for the 1899 edition.
