The collection of the Russian historian and educator Nikolai Albertovich Kuna (1877–1940) includes the author's text of his book 'What the Ancient Greeks and Romans Told About Their Gods and Heroes'. The book beautifully retells ancient Greek myths and the epic poems 'Iliad' and 'Odyssey' by Homer, 'Theogony' by Hesiod, 'Argonautica' by Apollonius of Rhodes, tragedies by Athenian playwrights of the 5th century BC Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and many other works by ancient Greek and Roman authors. Moreover, Kuna's retelling of ancient mythology is so captivating that it resembles more an ancient Greek singer-storyteller than a Russian scholar. After Kuna's death, editors in 1954 shortened his book and gave it a new title 'Legends and Myths of Ancient Greece'. In this altered form, it was published in the following decades. The restored author's text is illustrated with drawings selected by Kuna himself. Also published is the continuation of this book - 'Eastern Cults in the Roman Empire', illustrated by the publishing house's editors.
