Antonio Jenovezi can rightfully be considered one of the founders of modern economic knowledge. Being a metaphysicist and theologian, the last fifteen years of his life, he completely devoted himself to the economy and ethics, heading the department of commerce and mechanics in 1754. “Lectures on trade, or civilian economy” are not only a university course, but also the result of its thoughts about the economy. Like A. Smith, Jenovezi shares criticism of the feudal world and advocates a more rational structure of public life. The human person, according to Jenovezi, represents the interaction of two forces - the right interest and the desire for public solidarity, the market is based on mutual assistance and trust. Being a product of the Enlightenment Century, the doctrine of the “civilian economy” Jenovezi nevertheless continues the ancient and medieval traditions that do not separate the economy from society and culture, as a result of which the discourse about the market includes questions about civil valor, virtue and common good.

The publication of the Russian translation of this fundamental monument of Italian economic thought is of undoubted interest to philosophers, sociologists, economists and everyone who is interested in the history of social and humanitarian thought
