Alexey Mukhieddin's monograph "Lebanese Confessionalism" is a study of the history of the development of Lebanese identity through the prism of confessional communities from the period preceding the formation of the "Greater Lebanon" state up to the centenary of the republic's statehood in 2020. The monograph explores the dialectical process of religious sects' struggle, starting from the infamous conflict between Maronites and Druze, which evolved in the 20th century into a prolonged Christian-Muslim war and later into a Shiite-Sunni schism within society. The research describes different aspects of the conflict, identifies key milestones in the development of socio-political processes, and also examines the influence of significant figures such as Camille Chamoun, Kamal Jumblatt, Imam Musa al-Sadr, and Rafik Hariri. During the period of the French mandate in the Levant, the territory of modern Lebanon was separated from geographical Syria. A republic oriented towards Paris with dominant Maronite positions was formed on this territory. As French influence weakened during Camille Chamoun's rule, Lebanon fell under the neocolonial hegemony of the United States. The civil war in the republic, although viewed by many Western experts as purely confessional, carried an anti-colonial fervor among the masses. A unique feature of this monograph is that it was written by an author with Lebanese roots who also received a traditional Russian orientalist education, studying at the Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg State University (2002–2006) and at the Faculty of International Relations of MGIMO (2006–2008). Perhaps the author is one of the numerous representatives of the mixed cluster born as a product of Soviet-Arab friendship. In his research, Alexey Mukhieddin has attempted to describe what escapes the attention of others.
