This publication describes the experience of evaluating the readability of legislative acts of the Russian Federation based on their syntactic analysis by computer linguistics methods. For this, a methodology of machine analysis of syntactic complexity with the construction of an integral index has been developed. For the first time, comprehensive statistics on the syntax of federal legislation were obtained. The authors came to the conclusion that the legislation since 1991 has become more difficult by 30% The book also contains an expert analysis of the prevailing legal, technical and linguistic approaches to lawmaking. Negative linguistic practices are described that make it difficult to perceive and clarify the provisions of laws. Proposals are presented to improve the legal technique of newly adopted legislative acts
