"Lavinia" is the last novel by Ursula Le Guin, first published in 2008. It was awarded the Locus literary prize for best fantasy novel in 2009. The hero of Virgil's "Aeneid" fights for the right to marry the daughter of King Latinus, with whom he is destined to found an empire. In the poem, Lavinia herself is only mentioned in a few lines. In Ursula Le Guin's novel, Lavinia finds her voice: she tells the story of her life - from a young girl who became the cause of a bloody war but stubbornly followed her chosen destiny, to maturity filled with the joy of motherhood and the bitterness of loss. Lavinia realizes that she is a character in a poem and converses with the "poet" who created her and the other characters, telling her about her future. The interplay of these two voices across time compares two perspectives on the world. Quote: "I think that if you have lost great happiness and try to regain it in your memories, you will involuntarily find only sadness, but if you do not try to mentally return to your happy past and linger there, it sometimes returns to you on its own and remains in your heart, silently supporting you." The book belongs to foreign fiction and would make a great gift. It is high-quality literature and interesting reading for fans of the famous writer as well as those who are not yet familiar with her work.
