The outstanding linguist and philologist Alexander Afanasevich Potebnya (1835-1891) stood at the origins of linguistics in Russia of the 19th century. His contribution is also great to folklore and the study of mythology. The work presented in this publication highlight the problems of language and myth, the mutual influence of different language and mythological systems. Developing the ideas of V. Humboldt, the Potebnya sought to find a mechanism that gives rise to thought in the language. A scientist you / VIL is also a large role of the language in the formation of the national identity of the people.
Considering the symbolism of folklore, the scientist found that completely opposite meanings can be concluded in the same image. Thanks to this, the semantic filling of symbols turned out to be richer than that of other researchers of folklore. Potebni"s views influenced a number of outstanding linguists of the twentieth century and contributed to the creation of modern science of language.
