The outstanding linguist and philologist Alexander Afanasevich Potebnya (1835-1891) stood at the origins of linguistics in Russia of the 19th century. His contribution is also great to folklore and the study of mythology. The work presented in this publication highlight the problems of language and myth, the mutual influence of different language and mythological systems. Developing the ideas of V. Humboldt, the Potebnya sought to find a mechanism that gives rise to thought in the language.
