Success came to him in 1889, when the humorous story “Three in the boat was published, not counting the dog "about the journey of three English gentlemen. Friends go on a swimming in the Thames in order to take a break from the bustle of the city. On the way, they fall into many funny situations from which they come out with truly English equanimity
