Thornton Wilder (1897-1975), a three-time laureate of the Pulitzer Prize, considered the goal of his work the revival of the "religious spirit" in American literature. Critics often reproached him for neglecting the problems of modernity, but Wilder continued to direct his eyes to the researcher in the depths of centuries. Appeal to eternal topics and sophisticated symbolism provided the writer with the status of a recognized classic.
The events of the novel "Bridge of King Louis of the Holy" (1927) occur in Peru in the summer of 1714. Five travelers die due to a cliff of the bridge. The lonely Franciscan monk, who accidentally turned out to be a witness to the disaster, saw God"s fishing in this tragedy. He decides to devote life to the search for an answer to the question why the Higher Forces brought together these five, what united them, which they deserved such an ominous finale and only their sins can explain everything that happened
