The monograph discusses the issues of the theory of the detective genre, some of the little -known chapters of its history, successful and not very successful examples of the competition of the adaptations of detectives with their literary source. It is shown how the detective manages to be primarily puzzling, without spoiling with artistry. Some popular myths about detective are debunked: the myth of the possibility of using a detective plot as a "packaging" for a "serious realistic novel", about the existence of "genre varieties" of a detective, etc. The question of the degree of proximity of the detective of different types of poetics is analyzed in detail, a hypothesis of the relationship of the detective with the Christian worldview is put forward, it shows what cost of the detective novel managed to become a novel, how the classics of the genre tried to turn the detective inside out and why these attempts did not have serious consequences for the history of the genre.
