Here is the first volume of the publication, the purpose of which is to show the history of comparative studies in scientific texts, accompanied by introductory articles and commentary. The historical sequence of texts representing the history of discipline, many of which are first translated into Russian, with their analytical support makes the publication unique against the background of such a manual and educational anthologies. The monograph covers the history of the comparative method from the origin of the concepts of “university” and “world literature” at the beginning of the 19th century. Prior to the development of principles and a conceptual apparatus for a comparative study as a university course in the middle of the XX century. Particular attention is paid to the history of Russian comparative studies and the features of its method, formed in the framework of historical poetics A.N. Veselovsky.
