The collection presents essays on the history of linguistic teachings, and each essay is devoted to one scientist or scientific pro -Eatics, reflected in the works of a particular linguist or a whole direction in the science of language. These essays were written for students of the Faculty of Philology in the process of teaching by the author of the courses “History of Linguistics”, “Introduction to Linguistics”, “General Linguistics” and “Language and Culture of Ancient India”. The presented work is not a textbook on the history of linguistics. Since the text does not reflect the consistent development of linguistics of the XIX and XX centuries, the chapters are devoted to individual scientists, whose scientific activity was especially interested in the author. So, for example, several essays of the collection are devoted to linguistics in ancient India, since it is this area that is the sphere of professional activity of the author. The book is addressed to teachers and students of philological faculties of universities, school teachers of the Russian language, as well as all those interested in the history of the science of language
