Vepsi - one of the small peoples of the Russian Federation, the descendants of the ancient weight, have long lived together with the Eastern Slavs (Russians) in the territory between Ladoga, Onega and White Lakes and are mentioned in the "Tales of Bygone Years" as one of the peoples who, together with the Russians, participated in calling the Varangians to Russia.
Vepses almost simultaneously with the Russians accepted Orthodoxy, and in the future their coexistence was reflected at all levels of the Veps language.
At the same time, Vepssky - one of the seven Baltic -Finnish languages - retained a bright original heritage, and also includes certain original features that have no analogues in related languages.
"The linguistic atlas of the Veps language" (Lava) is made on original materials on the Veps language, collected both by field and from archival and published sources.
It includes 150 linguistic maps, which demonstrate the area distribution of Veps language phenomena at the phonetic, morphological and lexical levels.
Analysis of the material proposed in the comments on the maps allows you to clarify the place of the Veps language in the Baltic-Finnish language continuum, to identify the main ways of penetration of foreign (Karelian and Russian) linguistic influence, clarify the boundaries of dialect areas, form a list of linguistic features that march individual dialects , determine the foci of the origin of a number of Veps language innovations.
On the basis of the data obtained, an attempt was also made to reconstruct the historical Veps territory
