The book is the first critical publication and study of one of the popular Byzantine life - Irina’s torment - in the Old Slavonic translation. The editing part includes the substantive publication of the Slavic text according to the ancient list - the Assumption collection of the XII century (Gim, Assumption. 4 perg) - with two critical devices that reflect the texts important for the history of all other lists of the monument, notes the differences from the Greek original and the most important language features, and the reconstruction of the original readings are proposed and substantiated.
The Greek text closest to the Slavic translation is parallel to the Greek text of a brief edition of torment, which is based on a list of the Vatican Apostolic Library Pal.gr.27 (XI century), with the bringing of discrepancies on other lists of brief and extensive editions of the life, relevant Slavic translation. Critical devices are adjacent to the publication of the Greek text, which reflect the paleographic characteristics of the manuscript Pal.gr.27 and discrepancies for five other manuscripts of a brief edition. Next, the reconstructed text of the Slavic translation and its translation into modern Russian are placed.
The research part of the book consists of two chapters: “Philology-linguistic commentary on the Greek text of Irina’s torment” and “Irina’s torment is the translated life of the oldest period of Slavic writing”. The third part includes the “Slavic-Greek Index of Words and Forms” and “Greek-Slavic Woman”.
