How does great humanitarian science arise? How is the reformatting of national culture? The author’s focus is the formation of the "historical and philological sciences" as a special constellation of disciplines, the struggle for learning humanitarian knowledge, which has been widely expanded in France since the 1860s. It was about which area the humanitarian knowledge should belong to the scope of literature or to the field of science. In France of the XIX century, this process came across a powerful barrier, consisting of a whole set of institutional barriers and the stereotypes of thinking and behavior consecrated by the tradition. In fact, the entire structure of French culture prevented the transformation of humanitarian knowledge into strict science. For decades and decades, what the heroes of this book had been doing and what they preached was perceived by some of their contemporaries as deeply nephrantsuz, moreover, anti -French activity.
