Is it worth it to believe the advantage of the thesis that in the noble environment in Russia of the XVIII-XIX century, the French language prevailed over the Russians? What role did the bilingualism and bigulturalism of the elites play in the process of national self -determination? And how did this feature of the noble life affect the formation of Russian society? To find answers to these questions, the authors of the book use instruments of social and cultural history, as well as historical sociolinguistics. The result of their collective work was a book that offers the reader the most complete study of the use of the French language of the social elite of the Russian Empire in the XVIII and XIX centuries. It discusses the main topics of Russian thought and literature and proposes a new view of the influence and consequences of bilingualism on Russian society, on politics, culture and literature in the Russian Empire for a long period. In addition, the study proposes to take a look at the Francophony as a pan -European phenomenon of the new time - that is, not limited to the experience of one country or its social groups, in order to understand how languages and cultures correlated with them, crossing national boundaries, can be borrowed by different nations.
