Here is the famous dictionary of Vladimir Ivanovich Dal, writer, ethnographer, historian. The book, on which he worked all his life, presents not only the vocabulary of the Russian language in all its diversity, it is also a kind of encyclopedia of Russian folk life. Many articles contain proverbs, sayings, excerpts from folk songs as examples.
This publication is a reduced version of the legendary dictionary, which fully contains more than 200 thousand words, not counting proverbs and sayings. In this book, words found in Russian classical literature are selected, words that seem to be familiar to the modern reader, but previously had other meanings, some of the vocabulary describing the realities of the time when this dictionary was created. The text is reproduced in modern spelling.
The publication is addressed to high school students, students of universities and colleges, as well as everyone who is interested in the Russian language and its history
