The book presents the names of Chuvash folk clothing of its details, jewelry, shoes and other accessories collected by the author for 15 years of work in the museum.
In the introductory part, the history of the study of the terms of Chuvash folk clothing is highlighted. The vocabulary consists of ten thematic sections, including the names: shirts and its details, outerwear, hats, jewelry, shoes, materials used for the manufacture of clothes, finishing materials, mittens and gloves, waist suspensions, waist clothing. In each section, the terms are located in alphabetical order, their advanced interpretations are given. Most of them include etymology (many names of the Chuvash folk costume have a common jurk, Arab-Persian origin), the distribution area, and variables and synonymous dialectisms are given. Many vocabulary articles are illustrated by copyright drawings and archival photographs.
At the end of the book there is a pointer that includes more than 2500 terms.
In the dictionary you can also find many terms associated with Chuvash ornamental art, dozens of previously unpublished names of motives of different patterns are given.
Terms are collected from various sources, including the works of researchers of the XVIII-XIX centuries. In ethnography, history, philology, folklore. Rich material is drawn from the manuscript archives of prominent figures of science and culture of Chuvashia - N.V. Nikolsky, N.I. Ashmarina, K.V. Elle, M.S. Spiridonova, I.N. Yurkina and others also large research work was carried out in the funds of the Memorial Museum-Quarter M.S. Spiridonova, Chuvash National Museum: inventory books have been carefully studied since the foundation of museums and other handwritten documents. The names of some details of clothing are recorded from the words of experts in Chuvash antiquity. Among them there are terms that are published for the first time. They were not preserved either in translation dictionaries or in the specialized literature on ethnography.
This publication is very important and valuable both for Chuvash linguistics, ethnography, and for cultural studies.
