In the published essays, one of the plots of linguistic historiography is presented, associated with the formation of the French school of scientific linguistics and Romanesque philology in the second half of the 19th century. There is a transition from the cyclic “idea of history”, still separated by G. Paris, to the realization of the real ratio between multidirectional diachrony (prospective and retrospective) and synchronia in the language - to think through research methods and their capabilities, which took place in the “Course of General Linguistics" F. de Saussure
