As part of a unified theory, the book summarizes the results of many years of research on the author devoted to a wide range of problems. The author pays particular attention to the study of the language as an activity. The language system in its dynamics, the development trends of the language, the general laws of its movement, the causes of language changes are studied. The book discusses the "behavior" of the smallest elements of the word (morpheme, interfix), and the functioning of individual spheres of language, up to such a complex phenomenon as the language of the city. Part I is devoted to a set of problems associated with the structure and semantics of a derivative word, and the theory of synchronous word formation. Part II is based on works devoted to the study of the language of big cities. It discusses a literary conversational language, urban expansion, jargon, children"s speech, features of male and female speech (this section is written in co -authorship with M.V. Kitaygorodskaya and N.N. Rozanova), as well as the language of emigrants. Part III examines the active processes occurring in the Russian language at the turn of the XX-XXI centuries. Part IV is devoted to the problems of communicative-pragmatic nature: the categories of politeness as the most important regulator of human speech behavior, typology of communicative failures (the last section is written in collaboration with O.P. Ermakova) The book is based on the richest language material. She offers the reader answers to many unresolved questions of the theory of Russian and general linguistics.
