Writing was not the only occupation in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's life. After being called to the army and assigned to an aviation regiment in 1921, he became a pilot - and remained one until the end of his life. The profession of a pilot at that time was particularly dangerous: conducting reconnaissance flights, transporting mail had to be done with far from perfect technical equipment. Emergency landings and even air crashes were not uncommon - he suffered serious injuries in two of them, and did not survive the third.
"Terre des Hommes" (Wind, Sand and Stars) - a collection of autobiographical essays by the French author, tells about this difficult, yet far from prosaic side of his life. Stories of courage, bravery, loyalty to duty are intertwined with reflections on the destiny of man, his path to freedom and happiness. This path is the flight itself, allowing one to find their "landscape of the heart," whether it be the vast desert, distant stars, or the entire planet of people.
