During the sweltering summer of 1935, on her way to North Yorkshire, Olivia Adamson meets an eccentric elderly lady. Lady Elspeth Pongleton convinces the new acquaintance to spend a few days at her ancient estate, where she plans to introduce the girl as her companion.
Having agreed, Olivia does not suspect that in Yorkshire, she will be long detained by the investigation of a crime, whose roots go back to the distant past.
