The foundation of labor economics is understanding how the labor market operates: why some people choose to work while others decide to leave the labor market, why some companies increase their workforce while others lay off employees, and why workers' earnings are distributed unevenly. The textbook provides an overview of the scientific field of labor economics with a focus on both theory and facts. The book relies much more on economic reasoning than competing textbooks. According to the author, this approach allows for a much better understanding of the mechanisms of the labor market than an approach that minimizes or completely ignores aspects of effective material delivery in economic theory.
