The book tells about the outstanding Russian commander Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov. During the Russian-Turkish war, 1787-1791 he was a student and companion Suvorov: he participated in the storm Izmail, in battles at Babadag and Machina, was seriously wounded. On August 26, 1812, Kutuzov gave the general battle of Napoleon"s troops under Borodino. He was forced to leave Moscow, but the French long lasted in the Russian capital. The defeat near Maloyaroslavets made them retreat along the old Smolensk road, and in this retreat, doubt and painful, they lost their terrible once army.
