Natsume Soseki is rightfully considered one of the most brilliant authors of Japan, a key figure in the literature of the new era. His early works gained popularity thanks to their vivid style and themes, and two trilogies, written by an already mature master, are an accurate portrait of the Japanese intelligentsia at the junction of the Meiji and Taisho eras. The central themes of the author's later novels are internal fracture, personal isolation, the crisis of the surrounding world, and internal catastrophe. Natsume Soseki is known not only for his fiction but also for his essays and poetry. His works have been translated into many languages of the world. The novel "Kokoro" by Natsume Soseki first appeared in 1914 on the pages of the "Asahi Shimbun" newspaper. The work consists of three parts and includes one hundred and ten chapters. The central theme of the novel, indicated in the title itself, is the inner world of a person, his "kokoro" during the era of dramatic events that Japan was experiencing at the turn of centuries and formations. In the author's homeland, the novel is a real bestseller and has been adapted into films several times. "Kokoro" is one of the first, iconic works of modern Japanese literature translated into Russian. In 1935, a translation by academician N. I. Konrad was published, and in 1943, a translation by S. Shakhmatov and H. Hirai. In both cases, the title of the novel was translated as "Heart". This edition represents the third translation of the novel into Russian.
