Teacher, educator, mentor. Their key role in preparing new generations for life cannot be overestimated. The development of civilization is impossible without those who pass on accumulated knowledge to the new generation. However, in recent decades, the prestige of the teaching profession in Russia has significantly declined. Promising graduates of universities, even those in pedagogical fields, try to apply their knowledge outside of schools, colleges, and lyceums.
The role of a mentor is no less important than that of a teacher - they help a less experienced or less knowledgeable colleague acquire certain knowledge and skills. Mentorship in science is especially important - young scientists, thanks to it, become involved in cutting-edge scientific research much faster.
With the aim of increasing the prestige of the teaching profession, attracting young specialists to schools and vocational education institutions, the year 2023 has been declared the Year of the Teacher and Mentor by the decree of the President of the Russian Federation. Numerous seminars, forums, and exhibitions focusing on education are being held this year to enhance the prestige of the profession and at least partially address the issue of staff shortages in the industry.
The materials of the main topic of this issue are dedicated to how, starting from school, we can and should prepare the intellectual and scientific elite of our country: how it was done in the past (mathematical schools in Soviet times) and how it is happening now (the Physics Faculty of Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Specialized Educational and Scientific Center-School named after A. N. Kolmogorov at Moscow State University, Pre-University of the Russian State Humanitarian University).
