The foundations of modern scientific thinking were laid in England in the 17th century with the establishment of the 'Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge', whose motto became 'Nullius in verba' ('Take nobody's word for it' in Latin). The motto signifies that scientific reports and publications should be supported by experiments and calculations conducted by humans, that is, solely by scientific evidence, and not just by words, including those of authorities.
