"Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution." These words of the prominent Russian-American evolutionary geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky, spoken almost half a century ago, have been quoted countless times since. But that doesn't make them any less true. Indeed, the theory of evolution remains not only the general theoretical foundation of modern ideas about life, but also a source of fruitful research approaches. Of course, it is impossible to cover all the research directions based on or developing the theory of evolution today, not only in a few articles, but even in a thick book. Our task is more modest: to give an idea of how diverse evolutionary thinking can be in modern science and how diverse the problems to which it can be applied are. Darwin called his main work "On the Origin of Species," but in the first decades after its publication, evolutionists were more interested in the evolution of large groups and changes in the structure of organisms and specific organs. But in the 20th century, the processes of speciation came to the forefront, that is, the very origin of species. Sergey Yastrebov's article discusses how scientists currently understand this process. What could be the connection between the theory of evolution and psychiatry? It turns out that it is precisely the evolutionary approach, a clear understanding of the mechanism of natural selection supported by the most modern molecular and cellular experimental methods, that allows us to understand why humans have such a variety of mental pathologies. Victoria Skobeeva's article delves into this topic. Living organisms are not the only type of systems capable of evolving and forming through evolutionary processes. But it is in biology that the understanding of evolutionary mechanisms has achieved the greatest success, creating the temptation to transfer this knowledge to other scientific fields, to consider the evolution of other complex systems (such as natural languages) as an analogy to biological evolution. Boris Zhukov's article is dedicated to the justification and productivity of such a transfer.
