Alexander Genis's memoir volume combines under one cover two very different books. In both, the reader will encounter familiar characters and material, but the texts radically differ in style. If the cycle of stories "Knitwear," built around the author's life, is dense lyrical prose with theological nuances, then "Return Address" remains within the honest boundaries of non-fiction and can serve as a key (down to photographs of the characters) to the first book. This counterpoint estranges the traditional memoir genre and makes it new and original.
