It is amazing that Dmitry Merezhkovsky, a serious philosopher, symbolist poet, literary critic, and author of historical novels, managed to create such a light, charmingly frivolous cycle that even the great Giovanni Boccaccio would have gladly signed. In "Italian Novellas," Merezhkovsky's talent is revealed from an unexpected angle: in the stylized stories reminiscent of the Middle Ages, there is a place for romantic knightly love, mischievous pranks of merry youths, and rough jokes in the style of the "Decameron," alongside philosophical reflections filled with the melancholy of loneliness and the fear of death.
