June 1888. Student Klim Ardashes is sent to England on a two-week scientific mission. Even on the steamship, he meets an English scientist. Having agreed to meet him in London, Klim finds him mortally wounded in a tunnel under the Thames. The dying professor asks the Russian student to find the killer. Fulfilling the last will of the deceased, Ardashes becomes involved in a dangerous investigation and even ends up in prison, but ultimately outpaces Scotland Yard in catching the criminal.
