In the innovative study of the Russian court culture of the late XVII - early XVIII centuries, the American historian Ernest Zitser acts with the methodologically sophisticated interpretation of carnival actions associated with the “all -illegal and all -otoric cathedral” and the phallocratic cult of the personality of Peter the Great. The “funeral” world of imaginary monarchs, knights and clergy appears the sphere where the “company” was created by those who believed in the new “Gospel of Peter”. Closing aspects of Petrovsky political theology, which before that ignored historians, this work proves that the transformation of Muscovy into imperial Russia was as much as the subject of bureaucratic reconstruction as the transition to a new faith, that is, as much transformation as transformation. The book disputes many of the common ideas about the religious and personnel policy of Peter I and stimulates the further study of its reign in the pan -European context of the baroque court culture of the early new time
