Konstantin Dmitrievich Vorobyov (1919–1975) was a writer and a participant in the Great Patriotic War. As a Kremlin cadet, he fought as a lieutenant near Moscow. In December 1941, near Klin, the concussed Lieutenant Vorobyov was captured and spent time in Klin, Rzhev, Smolensk, Kaunas, Salaspils, and Šiauliai prisoner-of-war camps (1941–1943). He escaped from captivity twice and led a partisan group.
His stories "The Cry" (1962) and "Killed near Moscow" (1963) are truthful accounts of the defense of Moscow in the autumn of 1941.
While in hiding in 1943, Vorobyov wrote an autobiographical story "It's Us, Lord!" (published in 1986) about his experiences as a prisoner of war. This work is of such artistic significance that, according to V. Astafyev, "even in an unfinished form... it can and should stand on the same shelf as Russian classics."
The story "The German in Felt Boots" (1966) is based on a real fact from camp life. In Salaspils, in the prisoner-of-war camp, Vorobyov encountered a guard who sympathized with the Russian prisoner and started bringing him bread.
The plot of the story "Borscht without Salt" (1968) takes place in peacetime, but the terrible echoes of war still linger in the hearts of those who lived through it.
