The discussion about the role of the Khazar Khaganate and the Khazars in the history of Eastern Europe remains one of the most heated in historical science. Many mysteries of Khazar history are no longer such: new discoveries in the fields of archaeology, written sources, genetics, DNA genealogy, and geography have answered many questions that puzzled scholars. Today it becomes evident that Khazaria was not a parasitic entity, but rather a developed state in military and economic terms, with its own writing system, judicial system, currency, etc. This is now proven. However, the excessive politicization of the Khazar issue still prevents the correct emphasis. This especially concerns the localization of Khazaria, which many Russian researchers continue to search for in the Lower Volga region. But where was the center of Khazar culture? Why should Itil not be sought in the Astrakhan region? To answer these and other questions, A.A. Klyosov and A.A.
