Mikhail Prishvin's autobiographical novel "Kascheev's Chain" is a colorful mosaic in which a multifaceted picture of life in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century is formed from individual vivid episodes. Landowners are going bankrupt and becoming impoverished, the age-old way of life in the village is falling apart. Merchants and industrialists are amassing huge fortunes through wild and adventurous methods. Once large families are crumbling and disintegrating. The youth are leaving their parental homes - some to join the revolution, some to pursue art, some to delve into science, and some simply to leave the country. Girls are rejecting the role of modest keepers of the home hearth and are thirsting for self-realization. Everything is vague, everything seems to have shifted - and groping in the fog, it is difficult, sometimes painfully, that they search for a path to the future...
